Anyone else a HUGE sports fan, but not care for soccer?

I'm with you OP. I used to play when I was younger but then started playing basketball. I just can never sit and watch it for more than 5 minutes.

I will say this one thing cuz honestly I got into soccer within the last five years and it has turned into my second favorite sport behind football. Finding a team and developing a rooting interest in a team is what makes it the most fun to watch. Me and all of my friends have favorite teams in the EPL and rock with USMNT heavy as well. Watching all the games, getting to know the players and who each of us like on the pitch make it much more interactive just like people talking about other sports. That England-US game probably was not all that entertaining to the neutral but as a fan that was a nerve racking 90 plus minutes. Playing basically the entire second half trying to soak up the England attacks, knowing that a 1-1 tie will go a long way for the your team in the tournament makes it great. The near misses, the great saves and tense set pieces make the sport what it is. I understand why you worry about low scores and what not but why is everyone so caught up with ties? I mean you have to change your thinking for soccer because the entire sport is based on points not a win-loss record. I have no idea how many wins Arsenal had in the EPL last year. I do know we fell by the wayside and finished with 75 pts which was 10 pts behind Chelsea who won the title. The fact there are ties just go into the sport. In a long season format ties in games you should lose and wins in games you should tie help win championships.

It is. Follow the English Premier League (EPL) next season, if you can. It's the best league in the world, has most of the top players (La Liga [Spain league] and Serie A [Italian] usually hold the others), and is the probably easier to follow in the US than the MLS is, believe it or not. But whatever you do, dont develop a fanhood for Chelsea. Any team but Chelsea.

The MLS is slowly getting better though. But it will be a long, long time before we see any in-their-prime stars suiting up for an MLS team.

Thank you, sir.

I'm definitely going to try and pay attention to the EPL and La Liga (Messi is one of my favorite players right now).

If you can watch a baseball game then you should watch a soccer game. I can't think of a more boring sport to watch on TV than baseball.

Because one doesn't exist.

seriously baseball games take 4 hours and people are complaining about watching 90 minutes of a game?

very strange. playoff baseball is really exciting at points though.

the most exciting sport is hockey. way to many fouls and home court cooking in basketball right now for me to fully be entertained.

why do soccer fans get so offended if people aren't a fan of the sport?  if you live in the states you have better things to watch, why does anyone have to like soccer?  it's a cool sport to play as a kid, but it's a horrible sport to watch.

Just replace soccer with American football in most of these complaints and see how everyone reacts.  If someone said football was a horrible sport to watch, I would expect 98% of the responses to include a stoneface and an insult to their manhood.  And for a lot of people who really hate on soccer, they fail to recognize equally frustrating flaws in their sport.

There are certainly soccer snobs in this country, then there's far more people who just disregard the sport without really trying to get into it.  There's a reason it's the most popular sport in the world.

^ How is it horrible?  Granted I was not a fan of soccer most of my life but after getting the game FIFA 2010 I have gain such a respect for the game. I didn't think it was possible to see all these trick moves these dudes were performing in the video game but when I checked you tube and saw the actual players doing it, I was in awe. The footwork is beyond any skill in any sport. Beyond amazing. Tell me you're not a fan of soccer after watching this...

Again, I am not trying to start an argument, but I honestly cant stand it when huge soccer fans use that line as basis for defending their sport.  There is ONE reason and one reason alone why soccer is the most popular sport in the world.  That reason is the amount of money it costs to play.

Is the only reasons its popular is because its cheap to play then why isnt basketball the worlds most popular sport? Its cheap to play. You need a ball and hoop in basketball and you need a ball and a goal in soccer. Also, if the only reason its popular is because its cheap, then why do so many people watch on TV? People watch stuff on TV to be entertained.

I have no problem with people not liking soccer. I have a problem with people who want to constantly say how it "sucks" or "its slow" because they dont understand the rules and strategy of the game.

Unless you try playing it, you won't really understand it. If you don't get it, I'll lose no sleep over it.

Billions of people CAN'T be wrong.

I never once said the ONLY reason soccer is popular is because its cheap.  I was saying it is the most popular because its so cheap.  People obviously dont watch soccer on TV because its cheap.  And yes, basketball is cheap too.  But think about having to need hoops to play as well as a court.  I know I dont have to tell you that all you need for soccer is an open area, four items (rocks, trees, backpacks, cones, boxes, jackets, etc) to lay down as goal posts, and a ball.  There arent always a ton of basketball courts in third world countries.  This is not to mention the fact that basketball IS a growing sport in popularity around the world.

And I know you arent outright saying this, but you (along with a lot of others) always assume that people just dont understand the sport.  Honestly, I've played soccer all my life, so I understand the rules and strategy.  But even people who didnt ever play, can pick up soccer relatively easily.  Of all sports, its gotta be the easiest to learn as far as just simple understanding of the game.
