Any Accounting majors/accountants on NT?

Since I interview enough people plus know a bunch of people in industry, I can assure you that 2 years isn't thought of much more than "oh, they got an offer from ________ and didn't really like it".

Never really thought about it that way, but that makes perfect sense. I think most people are in the same boat as me in the thought process of 2-3 years at Big 4 + CPA = golden opportunity from there on out. I mean at the same time, who REALLY likes Big 4? ;)

My wife is a CPA and is currently an Audit Manager at KPMG. This is her first season with them because her previous company (Rothstein and Kass) was bought out by KPMG. She seems opptomistic, but I know it's bout to get crazy for the next few months. Which gives me plenty of time to stay on the XBOX

Any thoughts on specialization?

I will start in audit and really want to mainly work on education related engagements. Since i will be 30 when i officially start i want to be able to do audit for 5 years and possible exit into a stable private or government role (will have CPA).

Any idea what sort of salary or roles i could expect in SF or NY type big markets?

RIP RK.

Same for me, my old firm.

Man, I am a year away from my undergrad in ACCT, 2 years away from my MACC, and however long away from my CPA.

I understand the rewards (I think), but this grind is REAL. I have never been so challenged in my life. I have had to redefine myself numerous times just to be in a position to succeed. I am passionate about accounting but this is no joke.

it is hard man :lol

The college I go to is very competitive and Big 4 along with local firms recruit heavy from our school. 2015 I am joining Beta Alpha Psi and gonna try and get in that recruiting loop and have something for busy season 2016. I hear good things, average things, and bad things about the Big 4. But I really don't understand a better way to get out and become stable quickly. Benefits, pay, experience, relocation, and then the opportunities that may come after. If anyone can comment on that please let me know. Also gonna have 50k in debt :{. Life man :lol. I am glad I won't quit though. NT strong :hat

There are also some local firms imma holla at too when the time comes

My wife loved RK, but KPMG has been good so far.

I assume she's in Dallas which is a solid market too. Roseland and NY are the one's I wouldn't want to be post merger.

I'm fine thus far - still think this has the legs to be good in terms of building up a segment of a practice. Time will tell.

Was she a manager at RK or promoted post?

Last year was her first year as a manager with RK. She was early promoted. And yes, we are in Dallas. Bright side is that KPMG recognizes Christmas and Easter lol

Putting the CPA on hold while I go for an EA, just to have some certification. So hard trying to study for CPA when you're doing 70-80 a week during busy season.

Ha, yeah...good point. Was out in Dallas for a training back in July, interesting place.

Nice - I won't ask names but I probably have an idea as to who your wife is if she's in audit. Good for her and you guys.

I got Sr. Manager out of this, so if anything a resume boost.

Good for you. How is your transition to a Big 4 going?

Just started studying for the CPA exam today (Becker). This is so exhausting. Going to be a real long six months...impressed at u people that managed to do this + actual work.

Most people take advantage of generous PTO during off season time to take tests

This is what I have been told.

I will try to do it outside of busy season if its possible. I have also heard that firms generally encourage you to pursue your CPA and are very understanding when things come up.

I don't know though since I haven't gotten there yet

PwC?

my goal for 2015 is to begin my CPA path...I have 135 credit hours...Since I'll be paying out of my pocket I'm going to take summer courses by August I should have 150 credit hours...all I would need is the 1yr of CPA experience to sit and obtain it after taking the exam..I want to have my CPA by 2016 no later than 2017 Lord willing..I'll be 26/27 by the time I get it

Since I deal with a lot of staff and associates who take time off for tests, my only thing is don't take like an obscene amount of time off for each exam. For example, 4 weeks off for BEC...it's like, learn to study ahead of time while working then take a week off to freshen up and sit.

^^^That is basically it. Showing discipline over a period of time so you don't have to overkill all at once. I think that is studying in general though

My plan was to study for 2 hours every day no matter what, except during busy season (I didn't study during busy season). But if I was working for less than 10 hours a day, I was gonna study for 2 hrs a day. Turn it into a habit.

Yes, great plan. I did similar.

I won't lie, I was on a big client back in the day and that completely screwed my timing up, but nonetheless I surpassed everything 4 years into my career (though, began taking tests in my 2nd), so I understand the process.

If you continue studying like it's part of your 9-5 even on PTO, you're likely to be more successful.
