So long as our dollar is the backed currency in the world, we will remain on top.
The U.S. financial system is in a fragile place. As the bailouts go on- and on, and on- the U.S. and the U.K. will increasingly depend on China, Japan and other nations to buy Treasurys. But Wednesday, a U.K. auction of $2.6 billion in 40-year treasury securities garnered only $2.3 billion of bids. And in the U.S., Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner implied that the dollar could be replaced as the premier currency for world financial reserves-something recently suggested by Chinese officials. (Geithner later backtracked).

your statement concerning our reign as the 'empire' of the modern coming to a close is probably true but everyone has known this for years......it isn't even dependent on our demise so much as the rapid progress of developing nations like china and india
but in regards to our "moral fiber" etc....lol. yeah, please name a time in our history when, morally, we were better off?
as far as policy & progression......it's a slow process as always. in the narrow scope of a short-term time-frame it can often be difficult to see exactly where we are headed.

This is the problem. My generation is so non-chalant and has this belief that things work themselves out. Aside from maybe 2 of my friends (my age) I can't have a serious topic with them about the state of the world. No one cares about !$@+. Everyone is so wrapped up in materialistic !$@+, twitter, Jordans etc. It's like they are asleep to the true state of the world.

As a foreigner, I am completely amazed by how effective the Republicans have been in their strategy to shout down any plans coming from the other side, despite having no alternative proposals to speak of. I can believe the public supporting them if they actually had a plan. But the only plan they have is to insult and contradict.
How did the American public become so misinformed?

If we remain apathetic and have this "everything will be alright" attitude while (not to offend anyone) less intelligent people spew hate and call a national health care system that would provide much needed insurance to millions "trampling the Constitution" then things certainly will not be ok.
If we allow our government to continue on with two wars that have done nothing but waste tax dollars and accomplish absolutely nothing we will not be ok.
If, like Mr. Herbert states in the article, Americans do not learn to live within their means and continue to live absolutely outlandish lifestyles that they certainly cannot afford then we will not be ok.

Both consistently put big business ahead of the people
How much longer are you guys going to hope one party gets it right in this rotten system?
