I'm around the game a lot so I'm adding new things to my game to make up for the inevitable.
I always want to be able to compete.

Personally I can really tell a decline in the recovery process. If I don't get a good night rest, sit in an ice tube for 20 minutes, wear a lunarlon shoe (Hyperdunks, Kobe 8 or 9) I am really feeling it the next day. Also, what is gone for me is the days of just walking in the gym and playing. It's the jumprope and a couple of laps and stretching before I hit the floor. And if I lose and have to wait more than one game I'm done, or go to the track or weightroom. Too old to sit around a wait a few games to get back on again. I use to be against Iverson when he said I'm too old to come of the bench, by having to get loose and play for a few minutes and come back to the bench and wait to play again. I now fully understand where he was coming from.
Playing wise I still feel good because I play daily, but the layoff during the holidays had me out of it, being yesterday was the first time I played in 3 weeks. Around my way during the holidays you can't find a game anywhere....
Im 31 now and Im just as good/athletic as I was when I was 21....
The difference I play a lot more now. Im more serious about fitness and nutrition now I guess since Im older now, or maybe because they opened a gym next door to me.
Honestly the biggest thing is staying sharp. Even if I can get time to hit some jumpers and dribble a bit for like 15 minutes, it keeps that muscle memory intact.
BasicallyThat's interesting. I often wonder about that. It would be interesting to have 6 months of no work and stuff to see if I could get it back. I don't know if it's the mileage or just lack of time that is the difference - but I suspect the latter and you're probably testament to that.
In HS I played all the time. It was easy to play a few hours a day and lift or run in the evening.
Then College I was down to a few days a week, then work, then kids... I'd love to have the time but there aren't the hours in the day.
I need something like a 24 hour gym around here. I'd go late at night.
This is exactly how I feel. Being 29, I have knee pain now and I'm not as agile as I used to be lol. Sucks. To the OP, After playing thousands of hours of basketball in your life, you have the basic muscle memory. Keep playing and practicing and your skills will be just as sharp as they ever were. As far the conditioning and athleticism aspect is concerned, after the age of 25 or so, you have to be disciplined in order to stay quick and in order to maintain your stamina.
Also, being even a little bit overweight is terrible for athletic performance and quality of life after 25. When I was 22, I drank my way to being 30 lbs overweight but I played through it, I did not feel any extra soreness in my joints and I lost those 30 lbs by the time I turned 23. From 25 to 28, I did not over eat or drink often but i just gradually got to be 50 lbs overweight and it slowed me down, it put a hurt on my joints and back and generally sapped my energy. I spent the last two years losing that weight and at 30, I feel great.
One more thing, even if you play regularly and you are in shape and you are not overweight, you need to warmup, stretch and ice yourself down (at minimum, mix in some cold baths and showers after playing ball). In your late 20's and onward, you just have to take a number of measure in order to avoid soreness.
0 pts, 0 assists, 0 boards in my winter league debut. Two airballs, as well.
You serious my dude? Ouch. You visibly exited your prime in men's winter league. Haha ... not even one dime, or rebound? What about a foul? Please tell me you existed on the stat sheet somewhere.0 pts, 0 assists, 0 boards in my winter league debut. Two airballs, as well.
25 definitely isn't the decline for me, I feel like I'm peaking . Recovering from a pretty bad groin pull though right now and it's taking forever. maybe you start to heal slower.
WordI'm 30 and I feel like I'm still nice. The old man craft is taking over for the declining athleticism, but I'm still more athletic than the average joes at the rec
i was 180 in my prime... now im like 220... i always drop back to 205-210 by summer time... im 5 ten btwWhat was your height / weight when you were good, and how much weight did you get up to that made you change your game?
me personally? it was over the day i first started playing.
