you follow the steps in order....

48/2(9+3)     Parentheses

48/2*12      Multiplying

48/24          Division

=2
What is 48*0.5*12?

=288

Did the endless amount of source material provided in this thread by the 288'ers not prove it enough?

And there you have it, you now got the right answer.

This tells you the ranks of the operations: Parentheses outrank exponents, which outrank multiplication and division (but multiplication and division are at the same rank), and these two outrank addition and subtraction (which are together on the bottom rank).

you got me usain......due to this key sentence..."When you have a bunch of operations of the same rank, you just operate from left to right.(multiplication and division are at the same rank)"--http://www.purplemath.com/modules/orderops.htm

im wise enough to admit that i was incorrect at first and the grand answer is 288....

48/2(9+3)     Parentheses

48/2*12      Division(operate from left to right)

12*24          Multiply

=288....

Gonna re-post this proof one more time just to make sure y'all see it.. The fact that people still think it's 2 really bothers me..

Does 48/2(9+3) = 2 or 288? Instead of showing why the answer must be 288, I will prove that it simply cannot be 2..

ASSUMPTION: "48/2(9+3)" = 2
GIVEN: An equation that equals 2 must also equal all equations that equal 2.
GIVEN: "48/(2(9+3))" = 2
GIVEN: "48/(2(9+3))" = "48/2(1/(9+3))" = 2 <- solve this out yourself if you need more convincing

if 48/2(9+3) = 2..

48/2(9+3) = 48/(2(9+3)) = 48/2(1/(9+3))

48/2(9+3) = 48/2(1/(9+3)) <--

And that is definitely a contradiction.. So therefore, the answer CANNOT be 2..

Unless you can somehow prove that "48/2(1/(9+3))" isn't equal to "48/(2(9+3))".. Since they both equal 2, good luck with that one..

the original problem is 48÷2(9+3)

everything after the division sign is in the denominator. if you argue that the (9+3) is not in the denominator, then the problem would have been written (48÷2)(9+3)
