You dont do math left to right.

Your first order of business is to solve 2(9 + 3) which is 24
For real?

I guess we divide 2(9+3) by 48?

Answer will be 0.5. Make this man a Nobel Laureate for coming up with another answer.

Whats the answer to this then?

36 / 2(9-3)

Spoiler [+]
is it 108 or 3??

there isn't enough parenthesis in the problem to specify what the original author intended. it should be written as (48/2)*(9+3) to reach an answer of 288. or 48/ (2(9+3)) to get an answer of 2.

I really think this is the only way we can definitively have one answer.

it depends. is the denominator 2(9-3) or is just 2?

if the denominator is 2(9-3) then you would get 2(6)= 12 in your denominator and get 3 as your final answer.

if your denominator is just 2, you would end up with (36/2) (9-3) which would equal 108.

you need more parenthesis to specify what the denominator is

108 same rules apply. Multiplication and division are interchangeable so you solve the problem left to right. I don't know how this is still being discussed

What is the answer to these 2 questions?
to the first one, the answer is 288

to the second one, the answer is 2

So that means that it is in fact 288? I mean 48 / 2 (9+3) and 48/2(9+3) are the same since you don't leave spaces in...?

no, you left out the extra parenthesis. in the second problem, there is an extra set of parenthesis which specifies what truly is in the denominator. it has nothing to do with spaces bro

I was talking about the first problem he posted. The second one? You can't just throw in those parentheses.
But the first one is exactly how it is written in the thread's title, so then it is really 288...
