I know players don't want surgery but every time an option is "we are going to see how it heals" but surgery as soon as possible seems to be the best option most of the time

Might as well just do it. If I'm the Padres I'd rather have him out the first few months than risk a re-injury in the middle of the season and potentially miss the rest of the year.
