Lakers Sign Wayne Ellington

The Los Angeles Lakers have signed shooting guard Wayne Ellington, it was announced today by General Manager Mitch Kupchak.

The five-year NBA veteran holds career averages of 6.4 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.0 assists over 312 games (35 starts) with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Memphis Grizzlies, Cleveland Cavaliers, and most recently, the Dallas Mavericks. Last season in Dallas, Ellington shot career-bests from the field (.437) and three-point range (.424), appearing in the postseason for the first time in his career.

The 26-year-old Ellington played three seasons at the University of North Carolina (2006-09), leading the Tar Heels to the NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship in 2009 while being named Final Four Most Outstanding Player.

Ellington is a decent backup. He could be another Meeks, more or less.

The Lakers wanted to draft him in in 2009, but he got selected before the Lakers could. Ended up selling the pick to the Knicks instead.

I'm guessing Kobe will be playing more SF, Swaggy can play SF in a pinch and they view X as more of a SF than SG.

That starting lineup probably doesn't mean much, especially with the patchwork roster they have (and the injuries, of course).

The lineup sounds set but the minutes are pretty much going to be up and down for everyone except Kobe.

Wes is probably the first guy who gets yanked. Shift Kobe over and put in Ellington, Young, or even Clarkson.

More interested to see who the backup bigs are to start out. We need Randle to get a lot of burn. I'm assuming Davis will be the backup C. No minutes for Kelly though from the looks of it.

With Nash, Kobe, and Xavier, there will be spots open all the time for injuries and such.

So you can get Clarkson minutes at the point, Wayne at the 2, Nick at SF, etc.

Like Mamba said, Kelly is the one that will struggle to find minutes.

The overpay was to get a second year option in.

Also gives more trade value to contenders if he approves the trade because it gives the new team control over his contract. Whereas last year, he'd be a couple month rental.

Ideally by seasons end when we are competing for the 11th seed in the west our starting pg is clarkson and starting pf is Randle (BC both deserve it) then next year we build around clarkson randle and Kobe

I'm just excited to see Clarkson and Randle on the court together. If we can get Henry out there with them, all the better. I want to see what they can do as a unit.

Just hope Byron wants to see it too.
