Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum went straight to the point and said Juan Manuel Lopez was affected by numerous distractions, both in his public life and personally, and they led to a lackluster showing at the Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum in Bayamon, where he lost his perfect record and his WBO featherweight title to Orlando Salido by technical knockout at 1:39 of the eighth round.
"The distractions did the job. Look at Miguel Cotto, the best thing he ever did was hold his training camps outside of Puerto Rico. And you can't be out of shape between fights," Arum said.
Juanma has been going through a divorce with his wife Barbara, and he was very heavy prior to this fight. In November/December, Arum believes Lopez was around 180 to 190-pounds and spent most of his training camp squeezing down to 126.
"Of course he was overweight. He was like 180 or 190-pounds when he was in the Philippines [for Manhy Pacquiao's birthday]. And I know all about his personal problems. Boxing is a serious business and you have to be in great physical condition between fights. And you have to lead a good life between fights. When he trains, he should follow's Cotto's direction and leave the island," Arum said.
