They have 16 games in 5 weeks. Why bring him back before the playoffs? Legitimately makes no sense. They're good enough to keep the one seed without him.
Conditioning is important. Memphis/Dallas can absolutely give them a run even at full strength, that’s definitely not an easy series if Mitchell can’t play playoff minutes.

Obviously they have no choice if he’s not right until the playoffs start.

I don’t think I’d say Memphis or Dallas or Portland would be “easy” match-ups for the Jazz.

Suns are only a game behind them, so I think those teams switch spots while Mitchell is out. The Jazz are too far ahead of everyone else to drop to lower than 2 though, IMO. But there’s going to be a pretty good team that’s the 7th seed in the West.

I think Portland and Memphis are favorable matchups for the jazz considering how well they’ve played against them in the regular season. Portland doesn’t have enough defense to slow down Utah and Memphis doesn’t have enough offense to keep up.

By no means easy matchups tho.

Right. I would expect Utah to prevail against whoever they get in the first round; but I don’t think they’ll just cruise through.

Knicks fans, what were your thoughts on the Thibs hiring last offseason? Weren't you guys hating on him?

If we had a search function that actually worked ( DCAllAfrican DCAllAfrican ), I'd go back and try to find the answers myself, but we don't.

IIRC, it was more non-Knicks fans hating on the Thibs hiring. I think the Kicks fans were fine with it, if not really excited.

He wasn't my top choice but I thought a young team could benefit from a hard *** like Thibs compared to a "friend" like Fizdale. He also put together a good coaching staff around him (Mike Woodson :(, Johnnie Bryant, Kenny Payne).

His coaching style does seem to wear thin after a while so I'm interested to see the next 2-3 years.

Saw this on another site and it really made me think:

38-year-old Karl Malone averaged 38 minutes per game and played 80 games in 01-02. 39-year-old Michael Jordan averaged 37 minutes per game and played all 82 games in 02-03. What stopped players from playing heavy minutes? Is it the pace of play being much faster than it was in that era? Or have players just figured out that they don't need to play as much in order to win championships?

Not sure where I read this, but I believe in this current era players cover way more ground every night. Running out to the 3 point line, switching on to other players, the pace in general, etc. Maybe that has something to do with it. If you're out running full speed that much, that often, I would imagine you're more susceptible to injuries.

Wasn’t upset with the Thibs hiring at all. I don’t think he’s the best coach but considering where the team was at he made perfect sense. Is he going to get you over the hump? Ehhh. But you know he’ll get the team playing hard and with pride

Pace is much faster. They used to walk the ball up the court to a half court set where the defense would be waiting. There’s also much more screening fighting through screens, and running to the opposite side of the court. In the 90s they used to dump it down to the Center and let the big man do to work.

The regular season is a joke now and only hurts the NBA product. “Elite” athlete’s who’s only job is to be ready to play basketball can’t play in two consecutive games. Just take the games off tv.

I do think that the NBA has to fix regular season somehow. Either shorten it to create sense of urgency and lessen injuries (but obviously this will cut revenue). Or create even more incentive for getting home court advantage.

The issue is that there are so many games and teams have figured out that it's not worth it to play every game. This hurts the NBA as an entertainment product. I don't want the NBA to become college basketball where people only care about the postseason.

People like us who post about the NBA on message boards and Twitter will always be there but it's hard to attract a new fans when the regular season has become de-emphasized

We’re already at the point where they only care about the playoffs. It seems like it’s too much to ask for a decent game with star players nowadays. I don’t wanna see Steph just keep scoring 40 on bums.
