MLS is not trash but it isn't a top 5 league. The quality of play is lower. But by supporting a local team you'll get to see local games of still very good quality. You'll get more into the sport by seeing games, having some stake in the team, having some pride in your city, meeting other guys into football etc.
LA Galaxy are a decent side and have the celebrity factor because a good portion of their roster is older European stars (Ashley Cole, Zlatan for example).
LAFC are a new side but play exciting football and have some very good talent even though they aren't world famous.
