Italy is such a beautiful country, but their footie fans and lack of real action to fight the rampant racism there are disgusting. Makes it hard to want to visit or root for any Serie A clubs.

In Rome (AS Roma) they're not as bad. I've been to more Roma games than any other team in Europe (7 games, cause I studied abroad there for like 5 months). Sat in the "ultras" section every time and I never saw any racism. That could be do to the the fact that Roma has more Black and South American players, maybe the city folk are more cultured, educated, and less xenophobic, - many factors come into play

But yea its bad in certain areas and small clubs in Italy and Spain. I remember when I got to Rome I had to "choose" a club cause I knew I'd be going to the Olimpico alot. I chose Roma over Lazio cause Lazio fans are some of the most racist fans in Europe. Lazio fans tend to be the people from the outskirts of Rome, lesser educated, conservative, and more ignorant type of people. So I chose Roma, thats my second favorite club in Europe.

Milan aren't bad either, AC and Inter fans are pretty educated and tolerant. Went to each home game there. But one thing I made sure during my long time in Rome was.. - I definitely wasn't going to a home Lazio game. I'm not in the business of putting my money in the pockets of ignorant idiots.

I can’t believe you never have, what made you such a Roma fans anyways, you’re Mexican right? Its interesting...

Oh can anyone answer this, if RM play BM can James play, since he’s technically out on “loan”?

It’s def on the bucket list. Basically choose Roma because of Totti. I’m not even sure how the choice came about. Really hard to watch Roma games back then.

Lazio fans are ****. I think they’re just stuck on the fact they believe they’re the “Real Rome” team.

It's identity politics between Roma and Lazio. Lazio fans feel like they're the real "Romans" cause their the blue collar conservative folks, they think Roma fans are the elites. Just like here in America, these Trump blue collar supporters think they're the real Americans, its a joke. I can't stand Lazio

When you do go to Rome let me know fool, holler at me. I know Rome like the back of my hand, more than Porto, more than any other city in the world ( besides Manhattan or Miami)

Lazio and its fanbase is ultra-right facist. No surprises there

I always find the socio-economic divides within intra-city rivalries to be interesting.

For instance, Inter is the well-to-do club in Milan while AC Milan's fans are more working class.

In Buenos Aires, tradionally River Plate is seen as the rich folks' club while Boca Juniors is the poor man's club. This line has been blurred over the decades though.

Definitely bro.

IMO, the most interesting rivalry in club football is the Celtic/Rangers rivalry, commonly known as the Old Firm. There is serious animosity between the two fanbases that goes beyond sports to the point that the Old Firm has come to embody the centuries-old conflict between Catholics and Protestants in Great Britain.

I agree that you'll see it more in Lazio fans than others, but it's not just a Lazio or small club thing unfortunately. It's ingrained in their culture.

Carlo Tavecchio, the president of the FIGC, was banned for six months by FIFA and UEFA for making racist comments before being elected. In complaining about the lack of opportunities for young Italian players in the youth system, he said:

In England, they identify the players coming in and, if they are professional, they are allowed to play. Here instead we get ‘Opti Poba’, who previously ate bananas and then suddenly becomes a first-team player with Lazio.

A year later, in discussing the sale of an amateur team’s headquarters, he said that the sale was “bought by that lousy Jew Anticoli.” Lotito is one of Tavecchio’s biggest supporters.

In 2015, Arrigo Sacchi, a legendary Italian manager, also lamented the lack of opportunities for young Italian players by saying: “...but to see so many colored players, to see so many foreigners, is an insult to Italian soccer.”

When the Anne Frank incident happened:

When the reading and silence was held, some Lazio fans protested by singing songs and doing the Roman salute. (A few Juventus fans also turned their backs and sang the Italian national anthem, and Roma fans drowned out the event by singing chants about their team. All these teams have been punished at some point for their fans being abusive toward minorities.)

Inter fans were fined $30,000 for racially abusing Marc Zoro. Lazio were fined €50,000 and given a stadium ban for racially abusing Kalidou Koulibaly and fined without a ban for racially abusing Antonio Rüdiger. After the referee paused the match as Koulibaly was being taunted, then-Lazio manager Stefano Pioli said: “I would not have stopped the match as that only lends importance to a minority of fans”

Atalanta fans were fined $55,000 for racially abusing Kevin Constant and Nigel de Jong. Their Curva Nord was ordered to be closed for one match, but that sentence was suspended.

Roma were fined $65,000 when their fans racially abused Mario Balotelli. Juventus were forced to play in an empty stadium after their fans racially taunted Balotelli. No one was punished when Fiorentina fans racially abused Balotelli as he boarded a bus.

Cagliari was also not punished for their fans abusing Sulley Muntari. Muntari left the field in response to the abuse, after being booked by the referee for complaining about the racist chanting.

The strongest punishments in recent memory against bigotry in Italian soccer both happened after the incidents gained international attention. Six Pro Patria fans were arrested and sentenced to jail time for abusing Kevin-Prince Boateng. And two Roma fans were jailed for being part of a 50-men horde that attacked Tottenham fans before their Europa League game against Lazio in 2012.

Lazio is by far the worst of them though. I have no idea how they're even allowed to be an actual club.

Balo did get it pretty hard in Italy. That’s why I don’t believe the Rumors of him coming back. With Roma being hinted at as a potential destination

People forget too easily. Juve fans were singing "a black Italian doesn't exist" for years because of him, even when they weren't playing against him. They hated him the most out of all black players just because he had the audacity to try to be one of them :smh:

Every time people in here post sob stories about Italian football falling off, I'm just sitting there with a :rolleyes face

https://www.reuters.com/article/soc...sulting-balotelli-chant-idUKGEE5AN21O20091124

Home supporters sang: “If you jump up and down, Balotelli will die” during Juve’s 1-0 Serie A win over Udinese on Sunday.

A debate in Italy has been raging about whether the phrase is racist given Balotelli, born in Palermo, is black.

The league’s disciplinary commissioner decided the new chant was “insulting and incites violence” but did not say it was racist.

Last season Juve were forced to play a game behind closed doors after fans chanted “a black Italian does not exist” at 19-year-old Balotelli in a match against Inter in Turin.

Juve fans have been singing the new chant for several months but with the top-of-the-table clash with leaders Inter coming up in two weeks, the authorities have now decided to fine the club.

Rome and Florence were two of my favorite places to visit. Only place I didn’t really enjoy in Italy was Venice

For you jape.

It’s really sad the abuse Balo got and will probably still get if he ever returns.

I’m gonna keep it real and say that there is no striker in Italy who is at the level Balo is at.

Kind of glad Italy didn’t make the WC. Humble these pos fans.

Balo overrated as ****... ppl just enamored with the idea that he's some wasted talent. Reminds me of some local streetball legend that never took it beyond the parks

I always wanted to visit Italy to see alot of historic sites like Trajans wall (I'm a bit of a history buff). I'll make sure I go in a group to avoid some ****.

I’m a bit biased because Balo is one of my favorite players. But like I said there isn’t a striker that could have had a real impact on the NT like Balo would have.

Trey Bantz Trey Bantz the Ranger and Celtic rivalry is dope, they have a documentary on it on Vice. Check it out for those interested.

Also, Trey, is the Boca vs River Plate rivalry also fueled by Native Indios vs European? Is that also part of the rivalry? I don’t know **** about South American rivalries.

Beans Beans Agreed on Venice, I didn’t even go. All I heard was it’s and old town with old people, no partying lol. But pleaseeeeeee tell me you went to Positano/Amalfi Coast? That place is so naturally beautiful it’s insane. I went to some club that’s inside some rock cave, overlooking the Mediterranean, right on the rocky beaches - there were literally thousands of glowing jellyfish, the scene was naturally out of this world...

I was trippin balls on Ecstasy so that added to it, but yoooo, it was so beautiful mannn. If I ever decide to get married, it’s gonna be there. For all those who plan on going to Italy please hit up Amalfi Coast..

Coupé It Coupé It stay wylin and living it up:lol

Speaking of racism in footy, I hope that people of color who are traveling to the WC can stay safe and have a good experience. I remember for the Euro 2012, English players were telling their family members to stay home for safety reasons.
My mom has traveled to Russia, Poland and other parts of Eastern Europe. She never mentioned experiencing any racism. Well if she did, she never brought it up. Overall, she had a great time. Not to say that a minority is automatically going to be face with it 100% of the time. But she did travel in a decent size group of 12 people or so.

In South America, how are black and other foreign players generally treated by fans?

was hoping we could avoid them until the final, was confident we could beat them in a one off versus over two legs. regardless, europa was going to have to be earned with atleti in the competition. Very excited and shook at the same time for this tie
