Exclusive: Marvel Moving Forward on THE INHUMANS Movie; Screenplay by Joe Robert Cole

Guardians of the Galaxy was Marvel’s big gamble on whether or not they could sell a group of unknown characters in a unique world based on the studio’s brand alone. They won that bet, and now it’s given Marvel the confidence to move forward on another team of mostly unknown, strange characters: The Inhumans. As we reported back in March 2011, the studio was considering adapting the comic into a movie. In July 2012, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige told Entertainment Weekly that if either Guardians or The Inhumans became a movie, audiences could expect an “X-Men-style ensemble, a la The Avengers.” In a broad sense, that’s true: A team of misfits and outsiders comes together to battle a larger foe; beyond that, I doubt many would compare Guardians to X-Men or The Avengers. But for over two years, there was no word on The Inhumans.

The other day, Vin Diesel dropped a hint about being part of The Inhumans, and it turns out he wasn’t just blowing smoke. The studio is happy with the existing script by Joe Robert Cole, and now the next logical step is to take it out to filmmakers. Hit the jump for more.

According to our sources, Marvel plans to handle The Inhumans in the same way they handled Guardians of the Galaxy. For those who don’t know, the original draft of Guardians was written by Nicole Perlman, who was part of Marvel’s writing program. That draft then went out to filmmakers. When James Gunn came on board, he added his flavor and details to the story, but the characters, story structure, and beats from Perlman’s draft remained in place. As Adam explained in his recent editorial, directors are brought on board to execute a specific vision.

Cole also came out of Marvel’s writing program, and the studio is pleased with his script, so now they’re presumably ready to take it out to filmmakers. We can also assume that since Guardians was a success, the studio is willing to bring on a director with a unique voice like Gunn. He didn’t upend the Marvel formula, but his personality flows through the picture. He was in tune with a group of oddball outsiders, and that made him the best man for the job.

So who’s the best choice for The Inhumans? Briefly, the Inhumans were created by alien experiments on primitive homo-sapiens. The alien race behind the experiments, the Kree, abandoned their work and the Inhumans went on to form a society of their own, which is led by the king Black Bolt and his family Medusa, Karnak, Gorgon, Triton, Crystal, Maximus the Mad, and the canine Lockjaw. For more on The Inhumans, read Marvel’s wiki page.

Our sources tell us that this movie is part of Marvel not only expanding its list of properties, but actively building a multiple-film cosmic universe.

To be clear, we don’t know the details about this script, and we don’t know the directors the studio has on its wish list. What we know is that Marvel is ready to move forward on The Inhumans, and we’re hearing it will take one of the dates on their current schedule.

Disney ain't gon' bother with the chump change the Riddick series makes. :lol

And I like the Riddick series.

That's an interesting way to do a script. Especially considering this JRC guy only ever wrote/directed one movie.

My fancast
Black Bolt - Vin Diesel
Maximus - Benedict Cumberbatch
Crystal - Amanda Seyfried. She's been killin it lately. Wouldn't be surprised if fans really like Crystal.
Medusa - Alice Eve. tbt i hardly care. Medusa will likely not be that important of a character
Triton - Will be all makeup/CGI anyway so IDAF. Probably a minor character anyway
Gorgon - See Triton
Karnak - No one gives a ****.

Inhumans is another comic book franchise I know jack diddly about. I'll probably see this opening night :lol

Marvel has built up a lot of goodwill with me

Definitely first day but I dont think I care to see Ant-Man until a high quality bootleg is out unless this film has ridiculous praise.

Riddick makes millions in DVD/blu-ray. MILLIONS. Last it was brought up they were #1

Have the next Riddick flick ending with him going through a black hole - Riddick is finally dead. End credits: Riddick wakes up on another wasteland of a planet only this time he's found by Groot. I am Groot. I am Riddick. Rocket vs. Riddick, Riddick vs. Drax (Vin vs. Bautista again).

PROFIT.

Billions upon billions.

Feige or however his name is spelled has said that they plan on opening out their years with sequels to established characters, so the earliest the Inhumans could come out is 2017. Avengers 3 comes out in 2018 according to someone's report, so it's possible that in A3, we could see whatever roster of Avengers along with Guardians and the Inhumans versus Thanos. Could be a big crossover.

The idea of a really big crossover is exciting. I wonder what they would call that movie.

Can't be called Avengers

Ewww inhumans??? :{ :{

Why do you have to get so gassed up marvel? The beginning of the end...it was only a matter of time before they jumped the shark or nuked the fridge or whatever the proper terminology is. Well it was beautiful while it lasted. Here's to Avengers 2 being great. I think phase 3 will start the decline....

I know it make millions but that still pales to comparison to what Marvel makes. Hell the 4th installment barely got a greenlight just due to dvd sales success not even from the box office. Not to mention the third film took a lot of convincing on Vin and the fans part to get made and it still didn't reach $100m.

Putting Riddick in a GotG film and it making $500m+ doesn't say much, it'll make as much w/o him.

Again I am a Riddick fan myself and wish it gets a FF treatment but Disney acquiring him for his own film will be on the bottom of their list, simple as that. They have much, much more profitable properties that'll make quadruple/quintuple the money the Riddick films makes.

Putting Riddick in the film is a small nod to the small following the series has and nothing more.

And I know Drax was portrayed a weak punk in the fil;m but dude would still destroy Riddick. :lol

Right now you just seem like the guy going against the grain, starting to hate because ppl didn't like ASM2 and thought Cap2 and GotG were better.

I can say it now, Inhumans and Ant Man could be IM2&3/Thor1/Cap1 quality and Marvel won't skip a beat as they move on to phase 4. The next movies would just come out and be better even if you complained about everyone.

Only decline will occur is if they pick the wrong person to run **** if Feige ever leaves.

Like right now you have no justification in trying to hate on Inhumans other than you not liking them. This was in the cards and hinted at earlier than now. Get used to it.

You can't crush my dream. Here's the thing you're not understanding, of course Marvel makes more money than the Riddick franchise. That goes without saying. It's a silly statement given the different pedigrees of each. Thing is if they're selling Marvel/Disney would listen simply based off how strong those sales are for something that didn't do great in the box office. It's fans that basically caused the 3rd installment to be made and get it the bigger budget and once again the DVD/blu-ray sales has prompted Universal to announce the forthcoming 4th installment. The Riddick films won't stop coming any time soon.

If Riddick was making hundreds of millions in the box office, it'd be very less likely that Marvel could buy them or that they'd even think of selling. Doing it in the current situation would just be combining a big name brand with a brand that gained some fame off it's grassroots movement and both would benefit from it. If they bought it might even open the door to clear up w/e problems they have with Universal and the Namor rights/distrubution.

I didn't say anything about putting Riddick in GotG and it making money. The obvious idea here would be to have Riddick benefit from being apart of Marvel. Care to guess how much money a Riddick movie would make backed by Marvel? Hell they'd probably could get away with that Pitch Black budget as long as it had strong ties to the MCU.

So you kinda got it backwards there. It's not about throwing in one character to an already existing franchise, it's having one character be propelled by the other franchises and the brand overall. So give me my end credits scene Marvel. Simple.

And no just from a hype standpoint you have Riddick holding his own against the whole damn team :lol You send him to Earth and have him lay out Cap too.

I am not going to drag this discussion with you but believe me I understand all you're saying and I still do not 100% agree. At this point, I really am not even sure the Riddick films will keep coming, the 4th installment is still not guaranteed until they actually start shooting it. It took 9 years for the 3rd follow up, I haven't read any reports when Vin even plans to shoot this film.

Putting/attaching the Marvel name isn't guaranteed sales or improvement on the box office, quality might increase but doesn't guarantee huge profits.

And like I said, instead of wasting a date for Riddick, they have bigger and better investments especially how big GotG has become and reports of Inhumans. BP and others should follow suit, not a Riddick project.

I'd love to see it happen but I prefer they just get their other Marvel properties running or even putting Vin in the film as Black Bolt.

Once Disney starts secretly funding them the 4th movie will be out by late 2016/early 2017.

I could bet money right now the Marvel name would guarantee a bigger first 3 days in the box office from most movies (given they fit genre wise) than without the name. Hell if Marvel had a Howard the Duck movie coming I bet it'd quintuple the original's earnings :lol That Marvel name carries weight. Look at Guardians. Unproven and untested. All they had was promo, trailers (which wasn't universally loved), and adding hype (along with it being a good movie) to get their success. It's not like ppl saw the film first and then decided to pay for it. So when it comes to Riddick they'd just have to focus on making the script better and maybe a better villain. Those Riddick fans would watch it 5 times in theaters.

Not really a fan of Vin being BB even though he hinted at it. Like the merging of brands comments much more but hey I wouldn't mind Vin technically being 3 characters in the MCU :lol

I think GotGs success isn't all in the name but the fact that is was actually very good. Good word of mouth, good cinemascore and good reviews really helped. Hell that 17min preview really got people panties wet and word of mouth from that was insane. :lol

I do think GotG would make $25m-$50m, maybe even up to $80m (just a weird number guess) less after it is all said and done if the movie wasn't as good as it was.

I also think Marvel announcing a GotG sequel at SDCC a week before it released really got the gears going too, people automatically thought Marvel was confident enough that the movie was so good that they committed to a sequel.

I saw GotG because I was curious and the trailers were good enough/funny and that the Marvel name was attached to it.

I watched GotG again because it was a damn good movie.

That's the thing about opening days though, it's all based off on what you see. Not every single person read advanced reviews. I can bet a grip of millions went to see it off the strength of Marvel's branding. So your #s may be right, maybe more of a loss, maybe less. Again, ppl aren't seeing the movie first and then paying for it.

Look @ IM 2 #s, IM3's, Thor 2, etc. Movies that a lot of ppl call crap. Hell ppl **** on Avengers.

So if you're gonna say word of mouth and cinema score mean something then it's not much. You think there won't be word of mouth for a Riddick movie set in the MCU? You could just contrast that with the amount of ppl that don't know Vin was the voice of Groot and they'll all be talking about the FF guy is now in Marvel. I mean it's not just Riddick but it's also Vin's star power as well and please believe the guys at Marvel can put in place a really good cinema score. Reuse Hans Zimmer for what it's worth and those loud *** Inception sounds :lol I mean who is to say the same director directs that movie or isn't open to a different score given the new elements that person will have at their disposal. With Marvel at the helm I don't see them letting a Riddick move of it's past quality fly this time around. So Riddick fans like you and me would most definitely be saying this is the best Riddick movie by far (while I'm sure a few would say it got Disneyfied :lol ).

SDCC stuff is trivial too. Marvel could do the same thing for a Riddick movie :lol Hell imo a venue like that is exactly where they'd announce they bought the rights in the first place so by this time in 2 years we're all talking about that. These small things you're mentioning aren't huge impediments.

I'm just being optimistic about it though. So might as well not drag this out until what Vin has said actually bears some fruit or it's revealed he was bull ********.
