On 2 October 1978, Tim Allen **** was arrested in Detroit forpossession of a pound and a half of cocaine. Under Michigan law, hecould have been sentenced to life in prison. Instead he turned state'sevidence -- the legal term for ratting on your cohorts. Allenreportedly fingered at least 21 co-conspirators, and in exchange, hewas sentenced to just five years under the more lenient (at that time)federal law. He was paroled after 2½ years, and after dropping his lastname, he has become one of America's most successful ex-cons gone legit.

Can't say I blame him.

Prior to the war on drugs and mandatory minimum sentencing "guidelines", drug offenders were let off with much lighter sentences. There was no incentive to cooperate with the prosecutors.

Nowadays, with judges handing down football numbers for drug offenses, it ain't even worth it. Even the "realest" ninja will squeal to avoid doing that kind of time.
