BILLY KING is out. Ed Stefanski is in.
A source in North Jersey confirmed last night that Stefanski, the general manager of the New Jersey Nets since the summer of 2004, will officially be namedto a similar position today with the 76ers.

Stefanski, who will be introduced at a news conference, replaces Billy King, who has been with the franchise since June 2, 1997, and has been serving in thedual roles of president and general manager since May 26, 2003.

Stefanski, who played basketball at Monsignor Bonner High and Penn and later coached at Bonner, had been in his ninth season working for the Nets.

The source said that the Sixers contacted the Nets about a week ago, securing permission to speak with Stefanski. The source also said that the opportunitycaught Stefanski by surprise, and that he had not been politicking for a job with his hometown team.

Neither King, Stefanski, chairman Ed Snider nor Peter Luukko, the president and chief operating officer of Comcast-Spectacor and chairman of GlobalSpectrum, responded to messages left by the Daily News late last night.

Stefanski is expected to sign a multiyear contract and will report directly to Luukko.

It is believed that no decision has been made on the future of head coach Maurice Cheeks.

Both King and Cheeks are in the final season of their respective contracts.

The move comes as somewhat of a surprise, because Snider had signed off on King's three-stage plan to rebuild the team. That began with the trading ofAllen Iverson to Denver last December and the subsequent buyout of the balance of Chris Webber's contract.

The second stage included the acquisition of Thaddeus Young, Jason Smith, Herbert Hill and the since-waived Derrick Byars in the NBA's June draft.

The third step was to come in the summer, when the Sixers are expected to have major salary- cap space and become a player in free agency and the trademarket.

The Sixers, though, are 5-12 after last night's 88-79 loss to the Atlanta Hawks, leaving them with their 10th loss in 13 games and a 3-6 record in thelifeless Wachovia Center.

Stefanski came to the Nets after a successful careeer as president of Preferred Mortgages Corp. and spent 20 years as a respected TV basketball analyst.*

Move Andre Iguodala, he's not happy, he's not thinking longterm, or get rid of Andre Miller, let Louis Williams take a shot at PG.

And Fresh is right, get Cheeks the hell out of there next. He looked so clueless in his post-game press conference last night. Stick to singing thenational anthem and not coaching basketball.

finally. Now the sixers can acutally start doing something..
How did we blow the lead last night against the hawks SMH

Sixer fans will be happy with ED. He is excellent at drafting ball players and can make trades work even it you never saw them coming.

Some of the stories that went around last years draft was that Rod wanted to draft a point guard because he was then going to use Marcus williams in a trade toget Zach Randolph or Jermaine O'neal. Stefanski and Rod Thorn both liked Sean Williams but Rod didn't know if this team could take a risk on him. (theydrafted Marcus Williams who stole and sold Laptops)

Stefanski talked with John Lucas Sr. before the pick and got one last reassurance that Sean was worth it if he fell to them. Rod changed his stance whenIndiana wanted collins out of the deal and ZBO was dealt to the knicks so they drafted Sean Williams with thoughts of maybe even trading him later on in thedraft for an all-star big man.

Sean is still young but is looking to be one of the steals of the draft and stefanski played a bigger role in drafting him then rod.

Also enjoy more of an european type player when it comes to the draft as well. First round you always go for the sure thing and the second is to take a chanceon a european player that may not come over for three years or not at all. But that is what Rod's philosophy is so it will rub off on Stefanski.

I'm not trying to make this like it is Jerry West coming to you guys but he will not let you guys down.
