Celtics' Pierce denies gesture was gang-related
BOSTON -- Celtics forward Paul Pierce, fined $25,000 for what the NBA called a "menacing gesture" during Game 3 of Boston's playoff series against Atlanta, denied that the sign was gang-related.

"I 100 percent do not in any way promote gang violence or anything close to it," Pierce said in a statement issued Wednesday before Game 5 of the series. "I am sorry if it was misinterpreted that way at Saturday's game."

The league fined Pierce for flashing a hand gesture toward Atlanta's Al Horford, holding up his right hand, forming an "O" with his thumb and index finger and extending the other three fingers. Although the gesture has been interpreted as a gang sign, Celtics basketball boss Danny Ainge said the three fingers represented "blood, sweat and tears."

Pierce does it before every game, Ainge said, adding that the fine would be appealed after the season.

Pierce said he didn't want to take any focus away from the playoffs, and added that his foundation is committed to helping urban youth stay away from gangs.

"I am extremely proud of the work I have done through the foundation to provide positive influences and safe havens for inner city kids," he said.

Paul, ya coulda said it was 3's up for Boston and that woulda avoided the gang talk...and now avoided this blatant lie. Still woulda been a seen as alittle 'rough' or what have you, but woulda been a nice alternative.

I think he did throw up Blood, but he really does do that like every game.

yeah so he throws up blood every game when hes introduced to intimidate his home crowd ..right?...just for the record paul pierce couldnt use the "threesfor boston" idea because that all started with dudes wearing adidas and paul is signed to nike.

Of course he threw up blood...why else would he stare down Horford and make the sign afterwards? You really think Horford was like "oh...blood,sweat, and tears....that silly Paul he he he"

He had no intention of going after Horford, but thought he would try to one-up the dude on some intimidation tactics by throwing up his gangsign....B-U-N-Z....he wasn't gonna do anything, and if he did, Horford woulda handled him w. the quickness....

im not seeing what the big deal is...

It's not really a big deal, because there are gang affiliated athletes....but, most people aren't dumb and don't buy this PC response from Pierce& the Celtics as to what he "actually" meant when he threw up the sign.

Roger Clemens writing Press Releases now?

I wasn't watching the game...but did the Celtics hit a 3-pointer or something? Shoulda just said Paul was celebrating his 3 or motioning that he would tryand hit a 3 aftr the timeout on the next possession.

"Blood, sweat and tears."

If anything that helps the situation and explanation all of 0%.

Still......nowadays nobody even knows it stems from that.

Note to self: The next time someone calls me a @#%%@, just star them down and then yell, "Oh yeah? Blood, sweat, and tears!"

They'll be so confused. It's brilliant.

it's kind of a silly situation that's snowballed, but the moment you allow things like that to happen on the court in front of a mainstream audience(despite s jackson doing it all the time) is the moment you give validity or allowance to it.

it gives many people the idea that the powers that be see nothing wrong with gang culture and therefore it's ok to emulate and/or promote it to a wideraudience.

you think the nba wants to be anywhere near that pr mess? it's a very big deal.

well he def wasn't throwin up 3 fingers, and i'm pretty sure hes not a kappa so that leaves what...

EDIT 2: he is NOT apart of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc....

dude should of just let it go instead of givin' that lame explanation.

yeah posted already last night...ya'll do searches round here?

I'm pretty sure everyone is aware that Pierce isn't a gang member, but the NBA isn't going to standby and let one of its stars try to look pike agang member to an outside audience
