NT, I need help buying a desktop computer.

I need a new desktop and I'm not sure which ones are good or not cause I'm not much of a computer whiz so I need some help on which one to choose. 

I'm willing to spend $600.

i got the HP Pavilion p6214y from bestbuy this past black friday.
i think it was a great price, $500. included a HD monitor and printer for free

If you go into a Staples ask if they have a Dell XPS 8000. It has 6 gigs of RAM, a 640 gig HD and an i5 Processor, and it should now be on clearance for $650. (At least it is where I am.) Very, very good machine for a really good price.

They got bought by HP. They still use the Compaq name, but they're still basically HPs.

I have a xeon 3450 (core i7) but I much rather have an AMD hexacore
the only reason I am sticking to intel to right now is because it supports OS X

IMO
intel for the office.
AMD for the home.

I'm still working off 2cores
AMD  Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5200 +(2 CPUs), ~2.7Ghz
with 5.6GB Ram... Built this system last year...

it's really not that hard to learn how to build a computer, I could hlep you out with it, i can build a sub 600 powerful i5 quad system, when a similar system would be over 1000$ from HP/etc.
