We were sent in some snaps of the Motorola Sholes / Droid / Your face, and although they're not full resolution, it's still better than nothing, eh?

We've been told from a separate source that the ROM on the phone is moving at break-neck speed with new builds almost daily.

P.S. Do you think the Motorola Sholes will be a Verizon World Edition handset?

We just received word from a tipster that the much-awaited Motorola Sholes or Motorola Tao will actually be called the Motorola Droid on Verizon Wireless.

Motorola Android handset will not run MOTOBLUR.

It will be a straight with Google device and will be the first Google Experience handset to offer built-in Adobe Flash support natively.

We have heard that the announcement will be made not next week but the week after.

UPDATE: We've been given specifications for the handset:

We've also been told there will be a keyboard-less version that's planned for 2010.

How to Root Your Droid (For Non-Linux/Non-Geeks)
Here's a guide written for non-linux users on how to root your droid. What you do beyond that, well, I have another thread set up for that. Let's getgoing!

You will need the following:
http://www.4shared.com/file/168496608/8fa27888/droid-root.html
OR
http://www.mediafire.com/?ydaqjmditjh
OR
http://www.multiupload.com/XYPZLK4K22
(Those 3 are the same file, just use either link, and choose another if any is dwn)
AND
http://developer.android.com/sdk/download.html?v=android-sdk_r04-windows.zip
AND
http://www.magicandroidapps.com/su.zip

Once you have all these files downloaded, extract them all into a new folder at C:\Android

You should now connect your Droid to your computer and Mount the SD Card through the phone (A dialogue will pop up on your phone asking to connect your SDCard. Click Mount)

Go to the C:\Android folder you created. Rename the file droid-root.zip to update.zip. Then take update.zip and move it to the SD Card on your phone.

Once this is done, unplug your phone and turn it off by holding the top button, then selecting Power Off.

Open your phone's keyboard. Hold down the letter X key on the keyboard and power your phone on WHILE HOLDING THIS KEY DOWN. You will see the Motorola logo, followed by a graphic with an ! mark on it. At this time let go of the X key and the power button. Press and hold the Volume + key on the side of your phone, then press the camera button while holding the Volume + key.

Now you will be presented with a menu. Navigate to "update" using the D-pad, and click the middle button. Now wait for the process to finish.

When it is complete, your phone will power up again. Go to Settings->Applications->Development and check the USB Debugging checkbox.

Connect your Droid to the Computer again.

Click Start on your computer, and click run. Type cmd in the box, and hit ok. Now type the following, pressing Enter after each line:

cd c:\Android\tools

adb push su /data/local

adb shell

su

mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system

cd /system/bin

mv su osu

cat /data/local/su > su

chmod 6755 su

ls -l *su
(you should see the following)
-rwsr-sr-x root root 76200 2008-08-01 05:00 osu
-rwsr-sr-x root root 76200 2009-05-30 11:28 su
(now continue typing these following lines to finish)

sync

reboot

You're done!

yea i've been watching this phone sinc i'm due for a new one. I don't kn if the 16gig internal memory has been confirmed yet. don't kno how itwill do compared to the iphon b/c with verizon u have to get the data plan when u purchase a smart phone

This is great, I needed a new Verizon phone and I was thinking of the Samsung Rogue but I might just get this one instead.

Looks good, but not a fan of phones with keyboards. If it lives up to the hype, I'll pick up the 2010 version.

I actually prefer touchscreens with a qwerty option.
Makes it easier to text, sometimes I get frustrated when there is one of those times when the touchscreen becomes annoyingly buggy.

Just checked the twitter this was updated a few hours ago.

We hope you Android lovers out there are sitting down, because we're about to knock your socks off. Android 2.0 hasn't been released, announced, or even pictured. Until now. And we're doing it like we're doing it for TV - major screenshots and major information right here, just for you, our beloved readers.

android-17.jpg

Android 2.0 looks to be a major improvement in Google's mobile OS and we couldn't be more excited about it. From native Exchange support to native Facebook support (it will sync with your contacts), browser improvements, a completely updated Maps application, unified email Inbox - there's much, much more - and a brand new UI makeover, version 2.0 starts to make Android a really viable (and interesting) platform. Bounce over the jump for all the screenshots and our walkthrough!

android-18.jpg

Please note: this isn't the final build of Android 2.0 and the follow reporting is based on the version we have running. Things can and will change prior to release.

android-7.jpg

Microsoft Exchange compatibility looks to be built-in to the OS now, and the new unified Inbox is perfect for keeping up with your personal and corporate email. You can star (flag for the corporate world) emails, mark multiple as read or unread, delete, forward - whatever you want basically. Emails load effortlessly. Unfortunately (or not so unfortunately) the unified Inbox won't work with your Gmail account as that uses the specific Google-made Gmail email application in Android.

Maps has been updated to include Layers. We'd imagine this will grow over time but now you can overlay search queries, Wikipedia entries, Latitude buddies, traffic, transit lines, and even load remote My Maps where you can share and receive directions with others. Android 2.0 seems to have some multi-touch gestures built-in like two-finger tapping in Maps, that will zoom in, however, there's no gesture to zoom out and pinching doesn't work. The browser has a nice little UI makeover with a redone URL entry bar which includes a Favicon. In terms of performance, no this version we have doesn't have Flash 10, Google keeps making strides in the browser space. It's worlds better than anything we've used previously on a stock Android OS, and jumps one notch higher than HTC's customized browser. There is not multi-touch in here as of now, but, you can double tap to zoom in and zoom out which is really all we've been asking for since Android 1.0. Oh and did we mention this thing flies? We're talking ridiculously close to iPhone 3GS web page speeds.

android-14.jpg

There's now a YouTube widget you can place directly on your homescreen and that allows for literally two-click YouTube video uploads. You hit record, the video recording app launches, you type in a title and description for your newly-recorded video, and it's up and away.

While the settings area is roughly the same overall, there's a lot of interesting additions in 2.0. For starters, there's haptic feedback built-in and a brand new Accessibility option. There's also a new option for Text-to-speech and generally with Android 2.0, you're given more control over the settings of your phone and more opportunities to customize it based on your liking. Something completely bewildering is the fact that if you set a lock code for the phone (seriously give people a choice to use numbers or letters as the passcode), there's no lock interval option, so each time your phone turns off (about every 30 seconds when not in use), you're forced to enter the password again on arrival. Lame.

android-4.jpg

Car Home. What? You don't know what that is? Ok, it's a new application that's meant to be used, uh, in your car. Seriously it's actually quite nice. It's a consolidated list of icons that help you perform things (presumably using voice commands if you're driving). Things like doing a voice search across the internet, getting driving directions, viewing a location on a map, selecting a contact, searching through your phone, etc. It's very cool that you can say, "map of gas stations" and that will open Google Maps and show you on the map where all the gas stations are closest to you. Not exactly new technology, but hey, we didn't say it was. We said this was all about pushing Android forward, and it is.

android-2.jpg

The Amazon MP3 application seems to work over 3G instead of just Wi-Fi now, but whether that is something done because of Android 2.0 or just because of the carrier it's running on, we're not positively sure.

android40.jpg

Contacts seem to be much more roomy and there's some great functionality built right in. Instead of hitting the contact and then diving through it to find the contact information you need, just tap the contact's photo. Up will spring a clean and tidy sub-menu with the pertinent information which can be clicked on. Send someone an email instantly, open up their Facebook profile, or even call them! Very cool and all great things that we love seeing.

Things like the music application and gallery application don't look to have changed too much, if at all. There also looks to be some more flexibility when defining homescreen shortcuts and things of that nature.

That's all we have for you today, guys. What do you think of Android 2.0 in its not-final version? We're loving it. And it could help that it's running on a pretty bad %$* piece of machinery, but hey, that's for another day.

just saw the commercial during the yankees game. good job with the constant updates but I think u and I are the only ones interested in this phone here lol

My phone just broke so i'm hunting right now...
I was gonna pick up the tour but wit this and the storm i'm gonna wait before i make a decision...

Lol. I saw the commercial to during that yankee marathon. Great game. Great win for NY.

I think your right but most people didn't care about this phone or at least until that game at least. Then I started getting texts asking me about it.

It's about time verizon got a phone that I actually want other than a BB.
contract runs out soon too, I'll probably get this

Yeah the selection of smartphones has been terrible for a very long time.

I'm just tired of the BB os. The storm is ok, but not as intuitive as a web os, Iphone os, or Android.

I still expect VZ to get the iphone by July if not next xmas at the absolute latest. They know there losing out on a lot of business because of that onedevice.

Wow....first time hearing about this. Might be copped. Just hope the Battery life isn't as horrible as the G1's.

Bye Bye Storm? Maybe....iPhone on deck also.

BTW Did you ever change your OS...? If so which one are you running? I'm running .167...best one yet. Fast, responsive, no memory loss of epicproportions as the other OS's.

Gotta admit... The commercial is great. Lot of positive feedback on it so far.

VZW seems to be poised to go for the jugular. They have been releasing a steady stream of VERY good and/or highly rated phones (enV Touch, env 3, Rogue, Alias,BB Tour, as well as the upcoming Chocolate, upcoming Storm 2, upcoming HTC, etc). There's no doubt that they have finally stepped up the quality of theirphones.

Add in the fact that their network is superior to any other carrier and I'd have to say that this Droid looks to have a chance.

With that said though, I'm reluctant to even consider a Motorola phone. Their quality has been horrible for years (when it comes to cell phone products).

I'll have to wait for it to drop and let the early adopters rate the pros and cons.
