Local news outlets are reporting that there have been explosions in two state government buildings in Maryland. These Maryland explosions took place today in Hanover, Maryland and Annapolis, the state capital. Both explosions are currently without motive and are under investigation by the local police. Involvement from anti-terror task forces is expected.

The Annapolis, Maryland, explosion took place only a small distance from the US Naval Academy and less than 15 minutes from my own home in Annapolis. Public school dismissals in the county were not impacted by the explosions.

What happened with the Maryland explosions?

According to Reuters, two packages exploded in Maryland state government buildings today. Both explosions occurred in mail rooms from similar, book-sized packages. At this time, there is no information about the origin of the packages, no clues have been released to the media, and no one has claimed responsibility for these explosions.

Where did the Maryland explosions take place?

There were two explosions that took place in Maryland today. One building was in Hanover and the other was in Annapolis. Both buildings are located in Anne Arundel County, which houses the state capital of Annapolis.

The Annapolis explosion took place in downtown at the Jeffrey Building on Francis Street. It has impacted travel through the downtown region and on Main Street.

The Hanover explosion took place at a Maryland State Department of Transportation building. BWI Airport is located near Hanover, though travel does not appear to be impacted at this time.

Were there injuries from the Maryland explosions?

WBAL-TV is reporting on air that there are no reported injuries from the explosions at this time. Devices were reported to produce a flame and a sulfur smell, but did not ignite a large fire. The affected buildings were evacuated.

Local media outlets have broken into television coverage and continue to update the situation as necessary. Materials and motives continue to be speculated on by news personnel and an official statement by government officials is expected later this afternoon or into the early evening.
