Do not expect New York Knicks guard Stephon Marbury to get traded to the Cavaliers any time soon. At least not while LeBron James is on the team.
"I don't know him that well," James said of Marbury. "But I couldn't have a guy like that on my team."
Marbury made headlines again and not because of his affordable Starbury One sneakers. Marbury left the Knicks on Tuesday. According to several reports out of New York, Marbury is upset because coach Isiah Thomas threatened to cut his minutes. Also, the New York Daily News reported Marbury threatened to talk about "Thomas' secrets."
The Knicks fined Marbury $180,000 for leaving the team before their game at Phoenix on Tuesday. In an e-mail to reporters in New York, Marbury said he had permission to leave the team, but a league source close to the situation said that was not true. The Knicks played at the Clippers on Wednesday night.
Marbury, according to that same league source, left New York on Wednesday for Los Angeles. Marbury will earn about $20 million this season. This is his fourth NBA team.
All-Star:
It was no surprise James is on the official All-Star ballot. James is joined by Drew Gooden, Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Larry Hughes for the Cavaliers. The All-Star Game will be at New Orleans Arena on Sunday, Feb. 17.
James, a three-time NBA All-Star starter from 2005 to 2007, led all players in votes received (2,516,049) during balloting for last year's game.
Fans can vote for starters at each NBA arena, in 20 languages on NBA.com; at more than 1,500 T-Mobile-owned retail locations with custom T-Mobile All-Star ballots and ballot boxes; and through mobile phones at t-zones on T-Mobile phones or wap.nba.com for any wireless carrier.
Cy Young:
Drew Gooden grew up in Oakland, Calif., with Indians pitcher C.C. Sabathia. They also played in the same Little League. Gooden was delighted when Sabathia was awarded the Cy Young award as the American League's best pitcher.
"I called and congratulated him," Gooden said. "He represented the Bay arena and now let's see if Jimmy Rollins can win the MVP. For C.C. to win this award and for him to just fall short of the World Series is a great accomplishment."
Philadelphia's Rollins is also from Oakland and is a one of the top candidates for the NL MVP award, which will be announced Tuesday.
