HQ Media Converter?

Does anyone know of any good free or cheap High quality media converters?  I need to turn some of my old .AVI videos to mp4 so I Can save them on my ipod.  Mediaconverter.org is good but it greatly decreases the quality.  Any help appreciated.  Thanks
