dying suede nubuck

does anyone know if hair dye would work on suede or nubuck when trying to dye it a lighter color from black i was interested to find out how could it be done i know it has been done because i have seen customizers like mache change black nubuck into bright red or blue nubuck i cant seem to find an answer to that
