Customizing football cleats

I've been interested in doing this for quite awhile, but I'm not sure how to go about this as cleats are often made of the foamy/plastic material. Anyone have any info on how to prep the material for painting? Do you use acetone like leather or does this require different treatment? Any help for a rookie would be greatly appreciated!
