The University of California, Berkeley, eliminated five of its intercollegiate sports programs Tuesday, two of which, baseball and men’s rugby, had become particular points of pride over the years.

The move comes at a time when athletics have faced strong criticism at Berkeley because money-losing sports have been subsidized while the academic departments have been forced to make severe cuts. The men’s and women’s gymnastics and women’s lacrosse teams will also be dropped from intercollegiate competition after this academic year.

By going to 24 programs, the university will save an estimated $4 million a year.

“Clearly, this is a painful outcome after months of deliberations, analysis and the examination of every viable alternative,

wonder what Jason Kidd thinks

There's a reason Cal is taking 20 percent more out of state kids...Need that $$$

The CSU system is screwed as well.

Very sad...

Possibly good for UC Davis...you know, until their baseball team gets slashed, too.

No you won't. It would violate Title IX if it brought the amount of women's sports under that of the number of men's sports. The men lost three sports while the women lost two. If Cal had a men's lacrosse program and that DIDN'T get cut, then you'd have a Title IX violation on your hands but it doesn't. The same happened two years ago when Syracuse cut the men's and women's swimming teams but replaced it with a women's Ice Hockey team to prevent a lawsuit.

That's a shame. I played rugby in college, so we watched a lot of Cal games. Although I doubt they'll have a problem raising the dough.

Just cut all athletics from UC San Diego... it's not like the students there pay attention to that anyway.

I actually wonder how much our school would save.
