I've always been intrigued by this kinda stuff as well. Any pics of it back in the day to compare to?

Repped. I love exploring abandoned buildings/ parks/ venues.

Coolest place I've been to so far has been Teufelsberg- an old Cold War Listening Station used by the Nazis way back when. The thrill was real cause I had gone in the middle of the night during a snowsotrm with my cousin and we had to break in through a small hole in the outer fence, and we ended up climbing to the top of the tower . Was a surreal experience because this place was literally a 20 min metro ride outside of central Berlin, so we were definitely on our own out there had anything happened to us.

Anyways, don't mean to thread-jack. Thanks for sharing the pics :hat . I'll have to add that to my bucket list.

It just shows how temporary manmade structures are.

yup. waste of money making these structures for events that go to waste after its done.

thats why they just gotta start doing world cup and Olympics in developed countries with the places already built for everyday use.

To be fair, much the reason towards the abandonment of these facilities had much to do with the war stricken fates of Yugoslavia and Bosnia. I think there are pictures of similar Olympic complexes and venues that were also abandoned. Many venues used for the 1936 Olympics in Berlin were abandoned (due to WW2) and some venues used during the 2004 Olympics in Athens (financial crisis recently) also had similar outcomes.

these olympic venues are pretty much all abandoned after the games.

im sure  this will also happen to the 8 soccer stadiums being built in brazil for the world cup.

there was a segment on Real Sports a few weeks ago about these "white elephants" that are left behind after the Olympics and World Cup.  South Africa built 10 new arenas for the last World Cup

and only 3 are still being used now, the others just sit empty going to waste

Brazil is about to be in the same boat

I remember the "update" they showed after only one month. They need to make a "Life After People" season 2 and use this place.

Maybe these venues should be made of materials that are easy to break down and recycle and something to that extent instead of this countries spending all this money then having them go to waste.
That was pretty much the London approach. That's why the volleyball complex was right in front of Buckingham Palace. I think much of the Olympic village was created as government housing afterwards with the stores and restaurants created to be torn down after the Olympics. It'll be fascinating to see Sochi in a couple years since they grossly overspent every other Olympics combined in a Mediterranean climate.

This is kind of funny because I always had a certain intrige to this kind of stuff too, but never really thought of it as fascinating until OP said it. And it's completely true.

Its kind of sad tho

It is. It's crazy how upbeat and alive the Olympics are in their current venues only for a lot of these same places to tranistion to barren and desolate. Creepy.

I'm trying to find some before pics that juxtapose those exact pictures, but it seems the abandonment has taken a stranglehold on that entire winter olympics, because that's all that pops up.

This thread has given me something fun to do at work. :lol

Great post OP very interesting.

Would love to explore places like this

This is insane. Do countries come out in the positive as far as the whole olympics go or do they waste all of the money to not even turn a profit?
