WWE founder and chairman Vince McMahon announced Thursday he is giving a professional football league another go.

It will be called the XFL, the same name of the league McMahon and NBC tried for one season in 2001, but it won't rely on flashy cheerleaders and antics as its predecessor did, he said.

Features of Returning XFL
• 8 teams to start

• 40 man rosters

• 10-game season beginning in January

• Two-hour game-time goal

• Any player with a criminal record precluded from playing

• Players won't receive forum to take personal stance on social issues on playing field

McMahon said being the only owner of all of the teams will allow him to do whatever he wants.

"I can say, 'Here are the rules, and as long as you are playing football in the stadium for us, you follow these rules.'"

This whole "my way or the highway" act from Vince though is going to be quite interesting to follow...

This can work though (not be a behemoth, but work) and Vince knows it. This is going to be cross-promoted on WWE to death, and it's going to be flooded on social media. It's going to get the media to talk about it constantly (you can bet he already has a handshake deal with ESPN).

I think it just has to be sold as its own entity (with own rules), and get the NFL's name completely out of their mouths because they don't need the constant comparisons. We're a country that has millions tune in to meaningless college bowl games played in empty stadiums.

Interesting, though there's still a lot of unknowns. I like a lot about the formatting. Having a solid streaming presence will help tremendously. The no criminal records will likely have a negative impact on the amount of star talent, as it takes away a bunch of guys who need a second chance. The anthem thing will likely hurt talent quality as well, though will probably draw in older viewers who harped on the NFL for the protests. Obviously this is far from a finished product, so I'll reserve judgement until everything comes together.

it's all on vince, it's his own money for this venture and nobody else. still got two years to pull out if he has any hesitations

How can you bet this? Pretty sure that would be part of the announcement if true.

I actually think he might be onto something this time around

Besides the changing climate, the biggest thing that'll probably work for this is [what seems like] the WWE brand being completely absent from it. This will probably be a far less over the top/gimmicky version of the XFL, exactly what they should have done the first time around. Vince didn't sell off a bunch of WWE shares to flop again. He wants it to be legit this time around. He knows how much the WWE brand has a stain on it and realizes he needs to limit it in order for the XFL to be successful.

Because why announce now if everything about the league isn’t even set? Still really early

I’m actually leaning towards this not even happening by 2020. Leaves a lot of room for Vince and whoever to make it work but it could also prove that maybe it’s more difficult than he thinks to create a league to compete with the nfl on a big national stage and ends up not happening

But I agree with you, doubt he has a deal In place with ESPN even though I wouldn’t be shocked if they did land XFL rights because they are pretty desperate but not sure how that would work with the whole nfl Monday night rights

He said in the presser that there will be NO WWE crossover whatsoever; superstars, commentary, etc. I'll believe it when I see it, but I think he wants to keep this totally separate.

NFL will forever trump (no pun intended) the XFL, but the fact that the XFL will be starting end of January/early February may help their cause.

he's going to use different form than just traditional tv and make it interactive (facebook watch, twitter, etc)
wwe tv deal is up and fox is interested in them since they just offered ufc a very low offer. best believe vince is going to negotiate xfl into that deal
would college kids be interested in skipping school and get paid? the big time athletes probably get more exposure and paid more at their universities

I don’t follow wrestling anymore, was diehard fan on the 90s up until 2002.

Didn’t know their USA deal? They’re still on USA right? Was up

Fox might help them get more views but wrestling is pretty garbage now

Yup still on USA.

is the xfl even competing with the nfl? they will be playing after the SB. not much programming to compete with after nfl season ends.
the big3 was a success, if the xfl can get a couple big names find the right cities that crave football, they got a shot

Was the Big 3 a success? I swear I heard about the opening game(s) and that was it.

I’m a basket all fan and didn’t watch a single second of big3

Don’t think you can compare the two at a. One was just a 3 on 3 with vets

XFL is gonna be a 2nd professional league with players playing at a high level in their prime

They need to get 2K on board asap to release a football game along with the inaugural season.

He already setting rules for black athletes that join the xfl he said kneeling will not be allowed smh xf-fail
