Anyone have a 4k Ultra HD television? Help

Thinking about getting a new TV soon, even tho my TV is pretty good I keep hearing about this "Ultimate HD" TV thats out there. I don't know much about it but is it worth it for some of you who have it? Do channels even offer 4k?

Just cop a cheap LED until cable comes out with programming for it. What's the point if your cable box will only support 1080p

Good point, but many people could have guessed "3d television" wouldn't be a major hit. It's "meh"

But from what I know, 4k televison has 4x more pixels than 1080 HD televisions? T

I wouldn't get one now since it's not much out that is in the resolution. I think youtube offers that resolution though, it looked kind of weird when I was looking at it from my laptop.

pretty much .... sure u cant pay a few grands and get one but for what? To have the ability of playing 4k? Look how long it took to play true 1080p programming. The 1080p tv was out long time ago.

It's not really a fad because that is where they are going in the future. This is more like when people were going from 720p to 1080p, this is just the next step.

With that said, it is pointless if your tv is smaller that 55".

They have displays at Best Buy for Sony and Samsung 4K sets. The picture is absolutely stunning but like mentioned, it's like driving a Lambo in stop-and-go traffic. Netflix has/will have support as well YouTube and they sell 4K players that upconvert. Your best bet is to just wait it out for now though. 1080p with a good frame rate + BluRay should be more than adequate for now

That analogy doesn't really work unless of course, eventually, everyone will have a Lambo?

5-7 years from now, I believe 4k is going to be the standard, you just have to wait for more support to come out.

I'm fine with my 1080p TV
As long as I can hook my MacBook up to my laptop via HDMI so I can see Ms. Starr make it clap in HD on a 64", I'm good

Was looking at one of those displays at Electronic Express during Black Friday for like 30 mins.
The picture is amazing. It really puts 1080 to shame.
They had one clip shot from a helicopter viewpoint above a large city and you could see the pedestrians walking down the sidewalk.
And off on the horizon you could see cars driving on the other side of the city.

Definitely not worth the price right now since no one is broadcasting in 4K, but still, they are impressive.

I'm so lost when it comes to tv technology but what's a 4k tv do? More pixels or something? Would I even notice a difference? And here I thought I was doing it with a curved tv

Wait a year for real. Right now the only input that can display 4K at the image speed standard of 60hz is Display port and the problem is you will only see that on expensive computer monitors. HDMI 2.0 is coming soon. If your TV is straight then wait year.

If you must have a 4k now, I would recommend either the Samsung UN55HU9000FXZA or the Sony XBR55X850A (both also come in bigger sizes as well)

However I would say don't get a 4k just yet. not enough places are broadcasting in it yet, & the motion refresh rates on them is not all there yet. You still do get some blur during faster motion scenes.  i would wait a few more years for them & the oleds to drop in price. OLED is supposedly better, richer & more realistic color.

If you choose to go with a non-4K TV, I would recommend the Samsung UN55H8000AFXZA or the Vizio M551d-A2R. The Samsung will definitely be better picture quality, but value wise the Vizio M-Series is one of the best on the market.

4k is basically 2x 1080p.

1920x1080 = 2k

3840x2160 = 4k.

4k 55 inch tv will give you ~125 ppi while a 2k 55 inch will give you ~40.

there's no content out for it yet. It like buying a blu ray player a couple years back but there aren't that many blu ray movies being released.

One of the main ways to find 4k video is on the web. However, sites like Youtube compress the hell out of the video. File sizes can be HUGE for these videos.

It's not a fad, it's the future since it's a resolution bump but there isn't much content out there because it's new and the companies still haven't decided what the best medium for distribution is.


I saw a couple sets yesterday. A Sony and Samsung TV and the picture was stunning.

Sony's got a store for 4K movies and shows and more is coming from them and others but for now it's not enough IMO unless money is not an issue.

A lot of the TV's have multicore CPU's which help in the upscaling process so normal HD content will look better but not better than native 4K content.
