Haha I know what you mean. For sure it's not a crap one. I would advise you to go off peak hours there as well as the wait can be pretty long. Maybe an early dinner or Sunday brunch/lunch. Those are the times that it's not too bad.

I've done it a couple of times. I had one in San Diego that I wasn't too crazy about. I just booked one for Chicago in the beginning of November. It turned out to be the Intercontinental Hotel, which is a good location. We'll see how the actual hotel is.

I've stayed at a place called the Baldwin Hotel. It's not 5 star but it's not bad. It has a really good location, just blocks away from Union Square and a block from Chinatown. I would try that if you don't mind a hotel that isn't fancy.
